Barney is a big, cuddly, purple anthropomorphic Tyrannosaurus rex who conveys learning through jumping around singing children's songs with a friendly, optimistic attitude. The costume is simple – with just a green belly to break up the rest of his purple body. Barney has two big eyes right at the top of his head and a huge smiling mouth with bright white teeth. He has two purple arms that stick out from the centre of his body and two stumpy legs with white claws. Barney often carries a bag of goodies known as the Barney Bag.
